ca•noe [kuh-noo]: noun, verb, -noed, -noe-ing.
-a lightweight, open boat propelled by one or more paddlers; typically with a single blade (not to be confused with cruise ship or yacht).

Historically a significant form of transportation, canoeing is often considered to be one of those quintessential Canadian outdoor adventures. What is it that people love so much about kneeling in a wobbly boat? Well, let’s just say there is something to be said for slowing down and getting somewhere by the strength of your paddle.

In Ontario, the number of paddling adventures is virtually limitless. We are talking over half a million lakes and rivers; along with countless lodges, adventure outfitters, canoe instructors and guides. Here you can go from urban paddling to multi-day backcountry canoe vacations. There is an experience to suit every adventure level from canoe tripping to a slow sweep around the lake to barreling down a fast moving river. What you’ll love is that even the absolute beginner can master the basic strokes required to enjoy a day out on the water.

The downside, if you tip your canoe you could be in store for some unexpected lessons. But despite the canoes reputation for being a little on the ‘tippy’ side, with a little practice it is pretty easy to stay in the boat. If you are a little hesitant or unsure of your skill level, Ontario offers some of the best paddling instruction around. You can sign up for any number of canoeing courses, private lessons or even combine the instruction with your trip. Most outfitters, guided trips and lodges offering canoe vacations in Ontario run from May to October. Whether you need a little instruction or a lot, here are some vacation ideas to suit any interest or skill level.
