Request a train stop in the deep woods for you and your canoe. Travel to where no roads follow. Discover the largest wetland area on earth. Remote, rugged and with a relatively small population, Northeastern Ontario covers a broad geographic area and is the heart of adventure.

Home to one of the first Hudson Bay Company trading posts, Northeastern Ontario is steeped in history and culture. Many small communities developed here along the original railway lines and the region still operates one of the last flag-stop train services in North America. From the Porcupine Gold Rush of 1912, the area of Timmins is still an active mining community where geology enthusiasts can don a lamp to explore a life in diamonds. The Polar Bear Habitat in Cochrane provides a chance to swim with the bears; while a more extreme adventure to Polar Bear Provincial Park will require a flight and special landing permit.

Not just wetlands, Northeastern Ontario also holds the largest island in a freshwater lake in the world. Manitoulin Island, in Lake Huron, is also dotted with over 108 freshwater lakes, islands within islands and covered with hiking and cycling trails. Heading to Sudbury, visitors can experience the largest city in Ontario (landwise) and look beyond the giant nickel to adventures including sea kayaking, fishing, camping, back country hiking and wilderness paddling.
